In an impressive display, Japan secured a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica at Dunedin Stadium, positioning themselves for a spot in the knockout rounds of the Women's World Cup. The Nadeshiko, showing the same dynamic passing game as in their previous 5-0 win against Zambia, are on track to advance to the last 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup. To solidify their progress, they rely on Spain defeating the African side in the later Group C game in Auckland.

Japan coach Futoshi Ikeda expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, stating, "We executed our plan effectively and achieved the desired outcome. Our players came with a clear goal in mind, and we are all working towards the same objective."

Shifting Mina Tanaka into an advanced midfield position, instead of playmaker Yui Hasegawa as in the previous match, Japan dominated the game early on. Left winger Hikaru Naomoto opened the scoring in the 25th minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Maria Paula Coto. Just two minutes later, teenager Aoba Fujino showcased her skills, beating the Costa Rican goalkeeper from a tight angle to double Japan's lead.

Following the rapid succession of goals, Costa Rica struggled to mount any significant threats against their opponents, and it seemed like a matter of time before Japan would add more goals to their tally. Despite making 25 attempts on goal, they were unable to capitalize further, a concern that coach Ikeda might address, considering the tougher challenges ahead.

Looking forward, Japan will face Spain in Wellington, in what is likely to be a pivotal match to determine the group's winner. Meanwhile, Costa Rica, still seeking their first World Cup victory, will take on Zambia in Hamilton concurrently.

When asked about her future as coach, Amelia Valverde, the Costa Rican coach, emphasized her focus on the ongoing World Cup and stated that all matches remain essential. She did not believe it was the right time to discuss her position.
