Olympique de Marseille officially announced the signing of Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Chelsea on Friday.

Reports from British media revealed that Chelsea decided to terminate Aubameyang's one-year remaining contract due to his underwhelming performance during his time with the west London club.

During his brief stint at Chelsea, the 34-year-old striker only made five starts in the Premier League, managing to score one goal against Crystal Palace in October. He also found the net twice during the Champions League group stage, but unfortunately, he was excluded from the squad for the knockout stages.

In response to the departure, Chelsea expressed their gratitude to Pierre and wished him the best for his future endeavors in a concise statement.

This move marks a homecoming for the French-born striker, who returns to France after a decade since his previous tenure at St Etienne, where he spent three seasons from 2010 to 2013.

Before joining Chelsea, Aubameyang had a remarkable journey in his career, playing for Ligue 1 clubs such as Lille and AS Monaco in the early stages. Subsequently, he enjoyed successful spells with Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal.

Notably, Aubameyang holds the impressive record of being Gabon's all-time leading goal scorer, with 30 goals in 73 matches. He was recognized as the African Footballer of the Year in 2015.

While he retired from international soccer in 2022, Aubameyang made a comeback announcement and rejoined the Gabonese national team this year, further adding to the anticipation surrounding his return to France with Marseille.
