As the FIFA Women's World Cup unfolds in Australia and New Zealand, an exceptional 18-year-old talent from Los Angeles, nurtured through the MLS NEXT academy, could play a pivotal role in the tournament.

Alyssa Thompson, the youngest player on the US women's national team roster, aims to achieve what no other international football team has done before: win three consecutive World Cups. The US women's team, four-time world champions, has always embraced challenges, criticism, and uncharted territories to forge new paths.

The journey of Thompson, along with her younger sister Gisele, began at MLS' Total Futbol Academy and the MLS NEXT boys academy, where they had to prove themselves and excel. As the national team looks to its next generation, the Thompson sisters embody the spirit of what lies ahead.

Thompson joined TFA at the age of nine in 2013, driven by her remarkable abilities and the support of her parents, both former athletes. Despite being the only girl among boys, the sisters demonstrated their skills on the pitch, and over the years, Thompson's speed and athleticism developed, shaping her into the creative and versatile winger she is today.

Their development journey also included a stint at ECNL side Real SoCal before returning to TFA in 2020. This time, as teenagers, they faced more skepticism and challenges, especially when becoming the first female players to register in MLS NEXT. However, they persisted and earned respect with their exceptional dedication and commitment.

Thompson's debut for the USWNT took place at Wembley Stadium when she was just 17, impressing with her ability to handle pressure with grace. Her decision to forgo college soccer and enter the 2023 NWSL Draft paid off when she became the youngest-ever No. 1 pick for her hometown club, Angel City FC.

Now, in New Zealand, Thompson is part of the US squad's pursuit of history—a three-peat in the Women's World Cup. Her unpredictability, creativity, and skill make her a vital asset in the team's plans for success this summer.

As her coach, Mario Gonzalez, proudly observes, Thompson's achievements are a result of her own efforts, dedication, and determination, making her a true trailblazer for future generations to follow.
