D.C. United has officially announced the mutual agreement to terminate the contract of forward Taxi Fountas with immediate effect. This decision comes as a result of ongoing developments surrounding Fountas' conduct.

The situation escalated when Major League Soccer (MLS) placed Fountas on administrative leave on July 21, subsequent to the league's identification of credible allegations against him. These allegations pertained to his use of language that was both prohibited and discriminatory towards another player.

This incident is not the first instance where Fountas has faced scrutiny. In 2022, he was the center of attention during a league investigation into allegations of racially abusive language directed towards a player from Inter Miami CF. While these allegations were found to be credible, the verifiability of the claims remained a challenge.

Taxi Fountas initially joined D.C. United in advance of the 2022 MLS season, having made the transition from his previous club, Rapid Vienna, which competes in the Austrian top-flight. As a Designated Player and a representative of the Greek national team, Fountas showcased his talents and abilities, earning recognition as an MLS All-Star in the preceding year. Over the course of 38 matches, he impressively scored 18 goals and provided four assists.

It is noteworthy that D.C. United's decision to mutually terminate Fountas' contract underscores the importance of maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment within the sport, while also addressing the necessity for accountability in the face of serious allegations.
