Botafogo, the current leaders of Brazil's Serie A, have made a significant acquisition by signing Diego Costa on a free transfer, as reported by the Brazilian club on Saturday. This move comes as a response to an ongoing injury crisis that the team is facing, particularly in their attacking lineup.

Tiquinho Soares, a former Porto striker who had emerged as a standout player in the Brazilian league, suffered a knee ligament injury during Botafogo's recent 0-0 draw against Cruzeiro. Soares had been the top goalscorer of the league and was awarded the title of player of the month for three consecutive months since the tournament's commencement in April. This injury left Botafogo with a shortage of options up front, prompting them to seek reinforcements.

Diego Costa, a 34-year-old striker with an illustrious career that includes spells at Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, emerged as a fitting solution to Botafogo's predicament. Having departed from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in June, Costa was available as a free agent. The agreement between Costa and Botafogo will see him sign a four-month contract with the club. This collaboration comes at a time when Botafogo is asserting dominance in the Brazilian league, securing 14 victories out of 18 games and establishing a commanding 12-point lead at the top of the standings.

Furthermore, Botafogo is also in contention for their second Copa Sudamericana title. They are set to compete against Defensa y Justicia from Argentina in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Costa shared his sentiments on social media, stating, "I'm very happy to have been chosen to be part of the family. Thanks and I see you soon."

The club also expressed their optimism about the acquisition, emphasizing that Diego Costa's experience and prowess as a striker will contribute significantly to their roster. The club confirmed that Costa's contract will extend until the conclusion of 2023. Costa is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro in the coming days, where he will reunite with coach Bruno Lage, with whom he previously collaborated during their time at Wolverhampton in England.

Diego Costa's footballing journey has been marked by impressive accomplishments. His time at Chelsea between 2014 and 2017 saw him establish himself as a formidable number nine, amassing 59 goals across various competitions and playing a pivotal role in securing two Premier League titles for the London-based club. Despite his successful tenure, a fallout with then-manager Antonio Conte led to Costa's departure and subsequent return to Atletico Madrid.

During his two stints at Atletico, Costa continued to thrive, netting a total of 83 goals and contributing to the team's triumphs, including two LaLiga titles and a victory in the Europa League. With his track record of success, Diego Costa's arrival at Botafogo is poised to provide a significant boost to the team's aspirations for continued excellence in both domestic and international competitions.
