The San Jose Earthquakes have made a significant addition to their roster by securing the services of US men's national team forward, Matthew Hoppe. The club recently announced that they have successfully completed a 12-month loan deal with Championship side Middlesbrough FC, a move aimed at revitalizing Hoppe's career and bringing him closer to his native California. The announcement was made on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment for both Hoppe and the Earthquakes.

At the age of 22, Matthew Hoppe made a memorable breakthrough onto the scene in late 2020 while playing for the German club FC Schalke 04. His impressive performances caught the attention of fans and experts alike, but his playing time has been limited since then. He embarked on footballing journeys at various locations including Mallorca in Spain, Hibernian in Scotland, and most recently, Middlesbrough in England.

The decision to bring Matthew Hoppe back to the United States during this Secondary Transfer Window is fueled by the collective aspiration to reignite his promising career, especially in proximity to his roots. Hoppe, who hails from California, had previously spent a year honing his skills at the LA Galaxy Academy during his formative years.

The Earthquakes' general manager, Chris Leitch, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, acknowledging Hoppe's dynamic potential and diverse experience across different leagues. Leitch highlighted Hoppe's versatility, not only praising his ability to excel in multiple positions but also recognizing his contribution to the US men's national team's success in winning the Gold Cup in 2021.

During his time at FC Schalke 04, Hoppe made a notable impact by scoring six goals in 22 appearances throughout the 2020-21 Bundesliga season. He achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first American player to score a hat trick in Germany's top-tier football competition. On the international stage, Hoppe has represented the US men's national team in eight games, registering one goal to his name.

Matthew Hoppe's addition to the San Jose Earthquakes is the second significant offensive signing the team has made this summer. The club had previously acquired Canadian international Ayo Akinola through an intra-league trade with Toronto FC, indicating their commitment to bolstering their attacking prowess.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Luchi Gonzalez, the Earthquakes are currently positioned sixth in the Western Conference standings. With a record of 8 wins, 7 losses, and 8 draws, totaling 32 points, the team is striving to secure a spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, aiming for a return to the postseason after their last appearance in 2020. The acquisition of Matthew Hoppe further underscores their determination to achieve success and elevate their performance in the league.
