Newcastle United's recent signing, Harvey Barnes, faces an extended period on the sidelines due to a significant foot injury, as confirmed by manager Eddie Howe during a press conference on Tuesday. Barnes, who arrived at the club from Leicester City in July, was compelled to leave the field in the 12th minute of Newcastle's remarkable 8-0 victory against Sheffield United last Sunday.

Eddie Howe provided details about the nature of the injury, explaining, "It appears to be an injury to a specific area of the foot, just below the toe, and it seems to be quite substantial." The 45-year-old manager also shared that they have already conducted scans and are currently awaiting the specialist's opinion to determine the next course of action, which may involve surgery. Howe noted, "It wasn't the result of a tackle; rather, it occurred while pushing off to initiate a run, making it quite an unusual injury."

In the wake of Barnes' injury, Anthony Gordon stepped in during the Sheffield United match and made a significant impact, contributing to the team's victory. Eddie Howe expressed his admiration for the 22-year-old, saying, "He's had an exceptional start to the season, and I'm particularly pleased with his level of fitness and athleticism, which have been notable strengths. He's also been productive in terms of goals, providing an assist and scoring one on Sunday."

Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in January, initially faced challenges breaking into the starting lineup but has already made five starts this season. Howe discussed his development, stating, "Sometimes, there's a period of adjustment, and some players take longer to settle. We never doubted Anthony's quality, and I believe the preseason and the six months with us before the summer break have been beneficial for his progress."

Newcastle, who were runners-up to Manchester United in last season's League Cup final, are gearing up to face Manchester City in the third round of the competition on Wednesday. Eddie Howe emphasized the importance of the tournament, saying, "It's a significant competition for us, and we will give it the utmost priority. Our aim is to advance as far as possible because we aspire to compete in every competition available to us."
