Liverpool and Netherlands captain, Virgil van Dijk, acknowledges that Liverpool is currently undergoing a transitional phase. Despite facing criticism for his performances last season, the 32-year-old defender remains confident in his ability to contribute positively to both his club and country after last season's challenges.

Once hailed as a fan favorite who rarely made mistakes, Van Dijk's form dipped last season, but he is optimistic about the fresh start he's made in the new campaign, despite his recent sending-off against Newcastle United.

Speaking to Dutch media on the eve of the Netherlands' European Championship qualifier against Greece in Eindhoven, Van Dijk expressed his feelings about Liverpool's transition phase. He mentioned the significance of the manager, Juergen Klopp, still considering him as an integral part of the "Liverpool 2.0" team. Van Dijk emphasized that he and Klopp have had extensive discussions during the early weeks of preparation, which reflected the manager's confidence in him.

Liverpool endured a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season, missing out on the lucrative Champions League for the first time since 2015-16. Following the departure of Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia in July, Van Dijk assumed the role of Liverpool captain. He acknowledged the differences between his responsibilities as captain for club and country, stating that the tasks as the national team captain are less demanding due to the limited time spent together.

Van Dijk's recent red card incident at Newcastle, where he was sent off for alleged verbal confrontation with the referee, marked an unusual occurrence in his career. Nevertheless, he remained positive about his season's start, highlighting his performance against Chelsea and Bournemouth. He expressed eagerness to return to action after serving his suspension for the Aston Villa match.

While Liverpool currently stands third in the Premier League standings with 10 points from four games, trailing leaders Manchester City by two points, Van Dijk faces the possibility of an extended ban for his red card incident.

Reflecting on the close season, Van Dijk noted that he had valuable time to introspect, taking advantage of a well-deserved break without a post-season tournament. He credited the support and discussions he had with his wife and club personnel for his personal growth and improvement, emphasizing the importance of self-critique as a football player. As the last season concluded, he recognized the signs of his progress and development.
