Tottenham Hotspur extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points following a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace, maintaining their unbeaten streak this season. Initially, Ange Postecoglou's team faced a resilient Palace side, with an evenly contested first half. However, Tottenham gained the upper hand shortly after the break, courtesy of an own goal by Joel Ward.

The momentum continued to favor Tottenham as their captain, Son Heung-min, secured their second goal in the 66th minute, consolidating their grip on the match. Although Palace managed a late consolation goal through Jordan Ayew in stoppage time, Tottenham remained in control for the majority of the game.

James Maddison, a standout player for Tottenham and formerly of Leicester City, played a significant role in both of the team's goals, showcasing his exceptional contribution to the team's success. This victory marked Tottenham's eighth win in ten games, setting a record as their best start to a top-flight season since 1960-61.

With this win, Tottenham finds themselves at the top of the league with 26 points, boasting a comfortable five-point lead over both Manchester City and Arsenal, who have yet to play their respective matches over the weekend. On the other hand, Crystal Palace currently occupies the 11th spot in the league with 12 points, struggling to make a significant impact in the match despite their best efforts.

Despite a critical assessment of his team's performance in the previous game, Postecoglou expressed satisfaction with Tottenham's discipline, focus, and persistence in this match, emphasizing the importance of maintaining these qualities in their upcoming fixtures. The manager also highlighted the team's dominant play during the period between their first and second goals, illustrating their capability to compete at the highest level.

While Tottenham's attacking prowess was evident, with Maddison leading the charge, their overall performance fell short of consistently troubling Palace's goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone, during the first half. Palace, on the other hand, made valiant efforts early on, with Ayew and Odsonne Edouard testing Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham's second goal, expertly executed through Maddison's collaboration with Brennan Johnson, demonstrated their offensive proficiency, with Son converting the opportunity into a goal. Despite an anxious finale due to Ayew's late goal, which survived a thorough VAR check, Tottenham managed to secure the crucial victory, accompanied by the promising return of Rodrigo Bentancur, their Uruguayan midfielder, after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury.
