Just three days after an ankle injury raised doubts about Erling Haaland's participation in the match against Young Boys, the Manchester City forward delivered a stellar performance, netting two goals in their 3-0 Champions League victory. With this feat, Haaland stands on the brink of surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy's record for the fewest appearances to reach 40 goals, as he currently boasts 39 goals from 34 appearances in the Champions League.
Despite his remarkable performance last season, Haaland lost out on the Ballon D'Or to Lionel Messi. Pep Guardiola, City's manager, was questioned about the possibility of Haaland clinching the award next year. In response, Guardiola emphasized that winning trophies alongside his teammates would significantly bolster Haaland's chances.
City secured a spot in the last 16 with two group stage matches still to play, thanks to their recent victory. Haaland's first goal came from a penalty, while Guardiola described his second goal, a left-footed rocket from 20 meters, as "amazing."
Guardiola revealed that Haaland was cleared to play after a successful training session. Expressing satisfaction at the achievement of securing a knockout berth, Guardiola emphasized the importance of finishing at the top of the group to ensure a home advantage in the last 16.
The manager expressed concern over a potential lengthy injury layoff for John Stones, who was substituted at halftime due to a muscular issue. Guardiola lamented the setback, highlighting Stones' professionalism and character as a loss for the team.
