Teams playing in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast will be allowed to choose 27 players for their squad, as announced by the Confederation of African Football on Friday. This is a slight reduction from the previous tournament in Cameroon in 2022, where teams were permitted a 28-man squad. The change from the usual 23 players was made in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the Ivory Coast event starting on January 13, only 23 out of the selected 27 players can be chosen for each match. This decision contrasts with UEFA's announcement in October, reducing the squad size for the Euro 2024 tournament to 23 players per team, after allowing 26 players in the previous edition due to COVID.

The Asian Cup in Qatar in January will also stick to the standard 23-man squads. It's worth noting that FIFA permitted 26 players at the last World Cup in Qatar in 2022, but this was an exception as the tournament was hosted mid-season.
