In a heartfelt announcement on Thursday, David Silva, the former Spain international, revealed his retirement from professional football. This decision comes in the wake of a significant setback—an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during pre-season training with his club, Real Sociedad.

The 37-year-old midfielder suffered the left knee injury earlier in July, just as he was preparing for his fourth season with the LaLiga club.

In a video shared on his social media, Silva expressed his emotions, saying, "Today is a somber day for me." He reflected on some of the memorable moments from his illustrious career and bid farewell to the sport that had been his life's dedication. He also fondly acknowledged his teammates, whom he regarded as family, and expressed how much he would miss them.

Throughout his career, Silva showcased exceptional talent as one of the finest playmakers of his generation. He enjoyed successful stints in various leagues and with the Spanish national team. Among his numerous achievements were winning the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship twice with Spain. Moreover, he secured the Copa del Rey twice—once with Valencia in 2008 and another with Sociedad in 2020.

His most prosperous club tenure was with Manchester City, where he spent a decade (2010-2020) and earned four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups. Silva's contributions to Manchester City's success were so remarkable that he was honored with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium following his departure in 2020.

A product of Valencia's academy, Silva leaves behind an impressive record of over 120 goals and almost 200 assists in nearly 750 club appearances. Additionally, he scored 35 times in 125 appearances for the Spanish national team.
