Dynamo FC Loans Striker Ferreira to Vasco da Gama for 2023 Season
Houston Dynamo FC made an announcement on Tuesday regarding their decision to loan striker Sebastián Ferreira to Vasco da Gama, a top-flight Brazilian club, for the remainder of 2023.
This move comes after the Paraguayan international experienced a reduced role in the team during 2023 under the guidance of new head coach Ben Olsen. Throughout the season, Ferreira was only able to accumulate around 300 minutes of playtime in 11 appearances, with only two of them being starts. In contrast, the previous year saw him as Houston's leading scorer with an impressive record of 13 goals and 3 assists in 31 games, out of which he started 29.
The loan to Vasco da Gama is seen as an opportunity for Ferreira to regain his form and make a significant impact in the Brazilian Serie A league, especially as Vasco da Gama currently languishes at the bottom of the table and faces the threat of relegation.
Dynamo's General Manager, Pat Onstad, expressed understanding and support for Ferreira's situation, acknowledging the challenges he faced during the year. Onstad highlighted that the decision was made to offer Ferreira a chance for more playing time in a competitive league during the next five months. Despite the loan, the club is hopeful for Ferreira's return in January, seeing the opportunity abroad as beneficial for his development.
It's worth noting that the loan deal does not create a Designated Player (DP) spot for Houston Dynamo FC. To free up a DP spot, the outgoing fee for DPs must exceed the incoming one, a scenario that has occurred in the past with other players in Major League Soccer, such as Rodolfo Pizarro of Inter Miami CF and Aké Loba of Nashville SC, who were both loaned to Liga MX clubs.
At present, the leading scorer for Houston Dynamo FC is Amine Bassi, a player signed during the offseason, with an impressive record of 8 goals and 3 assists. Meanwhile, Ben Olsen has utilized various strikers throughout the season, with a handful of other players contributing with three goals each.
As for their performance in the league, Houston Dynamo FC currently occupies the ninth position in the Western Conference standings. They currently hold the last spot for qualification to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, with domestic season play paused for Leagues Cup.
Overall, the loan to Vasco da Gama is seen as an opportunity for Sebastián Ferreira to revitalize his career and potentially make a positive impact on Vasco da Gama's position in the Serie A league, while Houston Dynamo FC aims to maintain their position and progress in the MLS standings during the temporary absence of their talented striker.
