Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has suggested that Harry Maguire should consider leaving the club if he lacks the confidence to compete for his position. This comes as reports circulate that Maguire is on the brink of finalizing a move to West Ham United.

Maguire, who was relieved of his captaincy by Ten Hag last month, saw limited action in the previous Premier League season, making just eight starts. During that time, central defensive roles were often filled by Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof.

Recent British media reports indicate that a deal has been reached, valuing Maguire at 30 million pounds ($38.01 million), for his transfer to West Ham United. Maguire originally became the world's most expensive defender when Manchester United acquired him from Leicester City for a staggering 80 million pounds in 2019.

Ten Hag spoke to reporters about Maguire's situation, emphasizing the need for him to assert himself and compete for his place in the team. The manager expressed confidence in Maguire's potential as a top-tier center back and highlighted his significance to both England and their team. However, Ten Hag underlined that Maguire needs to validate this potential through his performance on the field.

The manager's stance is clear: if Maguire is not self-assured enough to engage in the competition for his position, he should contemplate his future at the club. Ten Hag urged Maguire to make a decision based on his level of confidence and commitment. Nonetheless, the manager expressed contentment with Maguire's presence and highlighted the necessity of having high-caliber players who may not always start but possess the capability to make an impact when given the opportunity.

In the meantime, Manchester United is preparing to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Premier League opener, scheduled for later on Monday.
