Fiorentina faced an unexpected setback in their Serie A campaign, succumbing to a surprising 2-0 defeat against Empoli at home, failing to mount pressure on the Serie A leaders. Despite creating 18 chances compared to Empoli's seven, goals by Francesco Caputo and Emmanuel Gyasi shattered Fiorentina's aspirations and left them in fifth place, trailing leaders Inter Milan by a significant five-point margin.

Vincenzo Italiano, the Fiorentina coach, acknowledged the team's subpar performance, stating, "It's something that can happen. Today we found a team that punished us, and we have to say well done to them. We created a lot, but we were not effective in stopping their goals. We could have woken up with an incredible ranking; we have to accept this defeat and move on as we do with the victories."

Empoli seized the lead in the 21st minute, with Caputo delicately chipping the ball over Fiorentina's goalkeeper, Pietro Terracciano, from close range. Caputo's initial attempt to double the lead in first-half stoppage time was disallowed due to a handball, yet substitute Emmanuel Gyasi ultimately secured the victory for Empoli with a precise strike down the center of the goal in the 81st minute.

Despite Fiorentina's early opportunities through Nicolas Gonzalez and Alfred Duncan, Empoli's goalkeeper, Etrit Berisha, thwarted their efforts. While Fiorentina aimed to maintain their momentum following a resounding 3-1 victory over champions Napoli in their previous match, Empoli's resilient defense, along with Berisha's formidable goalkeeping, managed to repel Fiorentina's offensive onslaught during the second half.

Empoli's triumph propelled them to 17th place with seven points, lifting them out of the relegation zone with their second victory in nine games. Their upcoming match against sixth-placed Atalanta poses a new challenge, while Fiorentina prepares for a demanding away fixture against ninth-placed Lazio.
