Maguire Accepts Apology from Ghana MP Amid Economic Critique
Manchester United footballer Harry Maguire graciously accepted an apology from Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo, who had previously likened Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia's economic management to Maguire's on-field performance during a parliamentary debate on the budget last year. Adongo had specifically highlighted Maguire as "the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence" while criticizing Bawumia's economic policies.
In a widely shared social media address, Adongo accused Bawumia of mismanaging the economy, contributing to Ghana's severe economic crisis marked by soaring public debt, rampant inflation, and a weakened local currency.
During a subsequent debate on the 2024 budget, Adongo retracted his analogy, acknowledging Maguire's improved performance by stating that the footballer had "turned the corner." Adongo publicly apologized to Maguire, praising him as a "transformational footballer" now scoring goals for Manchester United.
Maguire, in response, accepted the apology and expressed anticipation for Adongo's presence at Old Trafford, the iconic home stadium of Manchester United. Despite accepting the apology, Maguire maintained his criticism of Vice-President Bawumia, accusing him of "roaming" around the International Monetary Fund (IMF) "with a cup in hand." The reference alluded to Ghana's government seeking assistance from the IMF, which approved a three-year, $3 billion program in May, including an immediate disbursement of $600 million. Bawumia, heading the government's economic management team, is also the chosen ruling party candidate for the 2024 elections.
